Microscopy Jewellery

Sometimes when you are working on something very closely you can find that you haven’t demonstrated the work that goes into one piece of jewellery. Most people might assume that the investment that you put in to each product is easy, as they don’t get to see what you do behind the scenes.

The Microscopy collection is a prime example of this. All in all this collection would have taken a couple of years to produce. When I first started to take Microscopy images I had no idea what I would end up doing with them. Some of you may be aware of the exhibit I did for The Gallery of Wonder where I took my microscopy imagery and transformed it into wearable artworks. These items were then displayed at the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair at the Sage Gateshead in 2010. They were there purely for display purposes, but I had so many inquiries that I decided to start selling the items. This is when Powder Butterfly was born, and it is why the Art Fair has a special place in my heart as it is where it all began. The Art Fair made me realize the importance of making direct contact with your supporters and how much you can gain from the feedback and contacts you make at this type of event.

The microscopy work is very unique as I have used a microscope to produce a series of digital images. These were produced as part of a residency that I carried out in the School of Biology in Newcastle University. The next stage was to identify high quality digital print techniques to transfer the images onto a variety of surfaces. This was the area that took a great deal of research and time, and it was not without its challenges and frustrations. The images themselves can be replicated as artworks that you can install in your chosen interior, or can be worn as wearable artworks. This collection of images is exclusive to Powder Butterfly and they create a wonderful talking point. If you are interested in something unique, wearable, abstract and not on the high street this is the collection for you.

The images below are designed to demonstrate the original starting point and the final outcome. As with all of my pieces I can transfer the image onto any of the following formats unless they are limited editions. In which case it is a good idea to get in touch with me by email to find out what I can create for you personally. Many of these items can be found on Etsy but if there is something here that you cannot find please feel free to get in touch.
